    chillin' and grillin
so i been on vacation this whole week. didn't go anywhere, just staying at home and enjoying not being at work. and my days have been pretty full thus far. i pretty much get up at same time as if i were going to work, get the paper, make some coffee or tea, make a small breakfast, eat breakfast while reading the paper, go upstairs and surf the internet a bit and then get cracking on the day.

the house project so far has been building a garbage can path in the carport out to the alley... when my dad visited last may, we poured concrete under the carport for a driveway where a single car can park. for reasons that are kinda hazy to me now, we didn't do the entire floor of the carport... maybe 3/4ths of it, just enough for a car. oh yeah, that's right... we couldn't afford to pay for all the concrete at the time. oh well!

so now there is a 32" x 32" slab where our huge DC-issued garbage can sits and i've been laying out a two track path of concrete stepping stones out to the alley. once those are set and leveled, we're going to buy bulk gravel rocks to fill in all the gaps between the tiles and the driveway. sounds confusing but if i get off my lazy arse today, i'll take pics.

also doing other little house projects here and there. and eating healthy. and catching up on netflix. and running around and doing errands.

next thing i know, this vacay gonna be OVER. :(

    Jack it up pal!
i do have to admit that with a certain perversity, i am enjoying these higher gas prices. i drive some fuel efficient volkswagen. i pretty much only need to drive to and from work, which is about a 20 minute local jaunt. so that plus errands and going out, i only need to fill up once every two weeks. so, yknow, the extra $20/month i need to spend to fill up my car ain't breaking the bank. here's why i am enjoying higher gas prices:

    1. suv drivers feeling the pain. this one's a no-brainer. soccer mommies and guys who want to swing their big dicks by driving some H2 are now having to drop almost $400/month on gas. i hope that shit increases to $500. fuck you and your non-conservationalist ways. 80% of suv/truck drivers out there don't need to be fucking driving gas beasts. end of story.

    2. force energy behavior changes in people. this country is too fucking spoiled. no one wants to take mass transit, no one wants to share transportation, everyone is fucking me me me. well fuck you all. if you want to waste energy by driving yourself around town, you SHOULD have to pony up $5/gallon for that pleasure. with any luck, once we start breaching the $4 mark, maybe people will fucking wake up and go HAY GUYS maybe fossil fuels aren't an unlimited energy source!

    3. force energy policy changes in government. not really bloody likely with our current federal administration but on the regional, state, and city level... maybe, just MAYBE more civil planning will go towards mass transit systems that WORK. dc area WORKS. los angeles area does NOT WORK. governments need to take the lead and wake the fuck up that the tulip-covered days of $1 gallons of gas are looooooong gone (and yeah i actually remember paying 75 cents a gallon) and that shit NEEDS. TO. CHANGE. institute more HOV-mandatory lanes on the highway. stop allowing vast subdivisions of mcmansion homes to be built without public transportation being incorporated into the civil engineering design. encourage alternate-fuels. DO SOMETHING.

    4. reinvention of the us rail system. again, not bloody likely as long as amtrak is around. but ya know, traveling by train can be cool. with europe, japan and korea as paragons of rail travel, why are we as the most advanced country (supposedly) on this earth sucking hind tit in this field? yeah, air travel is nice but guess what? dependant on fossil fuels! do we even HAVE a bullet rail anywhere in this country? what a fucking joke.

this country for too long has had a selfish and spoiled sense of entitlement. like we are ENTITLED to cheap gas prices. we DESERVE cheap gas. we REQUIRE cheap gas. fuck you. even at $3/gallon, no one other than oil-producing countries pay less than us. europe? no. asia? HELL NO. canada's been paying more than us since peter jennings first came to the us to find work. far too long we have based our economies and government policies on cheap fuel. well time for us to wake the fuck up and start thinking real long-term, alternate solutions to just cheap gas. ever wonder why countries like japan and korea have longer winter vacations than summer? it's so the government doesn't have to pay heating costs of schools during the winter months, whereas there ain't no air conditioning during the summer.

and luckily, the dc metro area is a region where mass transit/conservation rules mostly work. the metro rail is pretty handy to get to all places dc and most places in NOVA and MD. each region has a pretty comprehensive bus system... even the upper crusty places like tyson's corner. this region even has a DRIVER-enforced system called 'slugging.' basically, most highways into DC during morning rush hour and out of DC during evening hours are either HOV-2 or HOV-3. so there are areas designated out in the burbs and in dc where drivers can pick up riders going to their area of destination so they can fulfill the HOV requirement. that fucking ROCKS. i think the only support government, local or otherwise, have given this system is to put up signs at the designated meeting areas.

so yeah, i ain't exactly crying any rivers for anyone who has to spend more for gas, even if it is severely affecting your bottomline and ability to have disposable income each month. the halcyon days of using gasoline to water your plants are long over. so suck it up and move on.

    fuck self-pity
first off, i'm not going to get on a soap box and cry about the death of america due to bush's 're-election.' fuck bush... ok got that out of my system.

second, fuck all of you who are talking about leaving the country. if it pisses you off that much that bush and his chronies are going to be around four more years, than do SOMETHING. get MOTIVATED. don't get mad, get EVEN. obviously just voting these days doesn't do dick. obviously the youth of america still doesn't give a fuck. obviously there are more redneck assjabbing morons in this country than those of us who are willing to put up with differences of people.

but it behooves those of us willing to stay and fight the good fight when you all pick up and leave our asses hanging in the wind. ever get abandoned by someone in a time of need? yeah, it fucking sucks. so don't expect any kind words from me if you're thinking of ejecting from america. at least do the decent thing and renounce your citizenship then and don't come back.

all that said, there are some of us in d.c. who will be starting our own political action committee who's sole purpose is to contribute to campaigns of candidates who are anti-bush. it's legal, it can be done.

look for the first STFUPAC (props go to gavv) fundraiser to be held at 1753 before the year's end. contributions will be in the form of $20 tickets that will guarantee you entrance into the most kickin party we've thrown in 2004. contributions are tax-deductible.

if you're interested in helping out, jet me an email.

    werd. peace out.

traveling back from los angeles by way of chicago, sunday reminded me why the chicago sun-times is one of the worst newspapers in the world.

content: the sunday issue is suppose to be the pride & joy of any daily newspaper out there. that is when you showcase just about every writing journalist you have on staff and make them work for their paycheck. some writers, they only live to write for the sunday editions. the sun-times had about 45% wire material from various sources. WTF? do i want to shell out $1.50 for a newspaper that is just regurgitating other papers' content? fuck no.

photos: worst. photos. ever. and i'm not just talking about the ones from staff photogs. seems like they pick the worst ones from reuters and ap as well. perhaps they find them in the bargain sale bin. and the columnist photo heads are horrible as well. yer a fucking journalist, doesn't mean you should dress like you're attending a local golf outing. polo shirts = tacky.

paper: these fucking guys are still using old school ink that leaves your fingers completely black. IT IS THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND AND FUCKING FOUR. i can dig the tabloid format, makes it easier to hold n read with one hand (don't ask what the other hand is doing). but fucking ink all over my hands in this day and age??? might as well get rid of the ballpoint pen and go back to ink wells and quills while we're fucking at it.

competition: yes, sadly enough, i was jonesyin' for a chicago tribune. in some sort of fucked up, raised from the teat upbringing... despite the fact the tribune company is one of the worst fuckign employers EVER to work for... they put out a decent newspaper. and i do miss it at times while in dc. unfortunately, o'hare airport seemed to be completely sold out of sunday tribs.

well, that's a lotta writing about just a newspaper... i'll write some more insights about my trip later.

    maybe.

    not so rational thinking
i just wrote a very outspoken and blatantly racist entry. i used the n-word and s-word many many times.

then i deleted it cause there's just no need to cause undue drama like that.

    live n learn.

i finally get to go home tomorrow.

i guess i haven't really missed chicago all that much. sure, i ate a lot of chicago foods i missed but honestly, i no longer feel any afinity to the town. it was good to see buncha friends and former coworkers i hadn't seen in awhile but... don't really want to be here nor would i want to move back.

plus i'm pretty damn pissed i couldn't get tix to thurs' beastie boys show at 930 club... that fucking shit sold out online today in 8 minutes.

    motherfucker.

this morning i actually woke up at 6am to attend roommate graham's boot camp he runs with a couple other guys. i even bought a yoga mat for this. kinda stark and eye-opening how far one can fall... a year of drinking and smoking certainly has caught up to me.

my legs feel like jello, my brain is fulla endorphins, and i'm back to being a vegetarian as of yesterday.

    werd.
